Mathura-Vrindavan is Closely associated with the life of Lord Krishna. Vrindavan is situated on the banks of river Yamuna which is a major pilgrimage centre. It is the place where Lord Krishna spent his childhood as a cowherd with his beloved consort Radha.

Vrindavan is Considered to be one of the oldest cities in the country and is littered with places of mythological significance.

The name 'Vrindavan' is derived from the word 'Vrinda', which is similar to Tulsi (basil) that grows abundantly around the town and neighbourhood. Two small groves of Vrinda still exist at Nidhivan and Seva Kunj. Seva Kunj is the place where Krishna performed Raaslila with Radha and the Gopis. Nidhi Van is said to be the place where the divine couple rested.
Vrindavan was surrounded with thick forests. In the last two centuries, urbanization and building projects have taken a toll on the vast forests and forests are depleting fast.
Vrindavan has been a big center of learning and Krishna worship for a long time. There are many Ashrams and places related with the life of Lord Krishna.
Vrindavan is considered a sacred place and a large number of people come here to renounce worldly life permanently. Generally retired, senior men and women seek to become sanyasis (hermits) in this place. The town is dotted with several Vidhwa Ashrams. They spend entire life in complete seclusion performing severe austerities.
